BOOK OF KELLS

The Old Library and the Book of Kells Exhibition - is a “must see” on the itinerary of all visitors to Dublin. Located in the heart of Dublin City, a walk through the cobbled stones of Trinity College Dublin will bring visitors back to the 18th century, when the magnificent Old Library building was constructed. Inside is housed the Book of Kells - a 9th-century gospel manuscript famous throughout the world. It was created by celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier. It is a masterwork of Western caligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination. It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure. The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity. Today, it is on permanent display at the Trinity College Library, Dublin.
