The city of Dublin can trace its origins back over 1000 years when the city was founded by the Vikings. In Irish Dublin is known as "Baile Átha Cliath"- which means "The Town of the Ford of the Hurdles". The English name for the city is derived from the Irish name Dubhlinn, meaning "black pool".

Dublin has many landmarks and monuments dating back hundreds of years. One of the oldest is Dublin Castle, which was first founded as a major defensive work on the orders of King John of England in 1204, shortly after the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169, when it was commanded that a castle be built with strong walls and good ditches for the defence of the city, the administration of justice, and the protection of the King’s treasure.

Dublin is also famous for its educational and cultural past. Trinity College, or University of Dublin, founded in 1591, has graduated authors Jonathan Swift, Oliver Goldsmith, and Oscar Wilde. The best known theatres include the Gaiety, Abbey, Olympia, Gate, and Grand Canal. Apart from being the focus of the country's literature and theatre, Dublin is also the focal point for much of Irish Art and the Irish artistic scene.
